I had a couple people ask about shooting images at night with flash.  Here is a wide shot of the environment we were working in.

Manual Exposure:
1/6 shutter speed
f 4.5
iso 200
18mm
 Images after the break...

Needless to say, it was pretty dark.  Only a sliver of light still in the sky.  I opened up my shutter speed (slowed it down) in order to burn the sky back in.

Once I had my sky where I wanted it, I moved in, recomposed and took the shot!

My settings for the image below were:
1/1.6 shutter speed
f 4.5
iso 200

Now remember, we are shooting these hand held.  No tripods.  And this is where using off camera flash can really help out.  Even though I had a super slow shutter speed programmed into the camera, my effective shutter speed was closer to 1/1000 of a second.

Huh?

Hows that you say?

Our flash duration (how long it takes for the flash to discharge) is around 1/1000 of a second.  Very fast.  Anything that we light with our flash will be burned in nice and sharp.  Frozen in time.

So shooting hand held at night when using flash is easy breezy!  No tripod needed, just some know how and a little experimentation!

Have fun and happy shooting!
