Parkway Portraits

With just two hours notice, we rallied the troops tonight in the Parkway.  I think we had 10 or so people out at this super last minute meet up.  Heres a few from tonight.

The Set Up - Cat

Ok so you should be seeing a pattern with these. 1/250th @ 5.6 flash @ 1/4power from 3-4 feet away in an umbrella.

Well with this set up we were running a total of 5 flashes. 3 on the back colums at 1/8th power zoomed to 85mm to keep a tight beam of light. It looks like our middle one was zoomed wider as the entire column is lit up. Oops! One flash in an umbrella at 1/4 power and one behind her for a rim light at 1/8th or 1/16th depending on the shot.

The result.

Set Up - The Car

ent out with Josh and John after the last meeting to practice some lighting.  Warmed up by shooting a few frames of the Fairlane.  We had an unexpected visitor wander onto our set, so we rolled with it.  Turns out his name is Tyson and he was quite the character.

Not much new to see here, but Josh had a wide shot of the set up, so I thought I'd put it up.

Strangers and Portraits

Josh, John and I  went out last night after the TCDPC meeting to shoot some portraits.  While we were setting up, a guy wandered by on his way to the next bar.  We said hello and a few minutes later he came back.  Turns out his name is Tyson and he posed for a few frames.  Fun times!

Set Up - The Dance

The initial idea for the Sweet Hearts dance was to do a white seamless set up.  I had 5 flashes to work with and could have made it happen, but had some space issues in the end.  I really needed an area at least 10 feet wide, and only had 8.  A few test shots later, and I couldn't get enough separation between the back ground and subject...blah blah blah.  One thing after another and I ended up with plan b.

So  here is the lay out.  We had a red feather boa, a flower and a frame (too big in the end for our space) as props for folks to use.

I Was Set Up!! ver 1.5

One more from last weekend. I started with one light as I usually do and shot a test exposure. Again, no light metered needed here. I can fire off a test frame and adjust from there.

After reviewing the first test shot I noticed the light on Rob was a bit hot and Stacy was a bit dark. With using one light, I needed to feather it a bit more to get an even exposure on both of them. So I brought it from 45 degrees around front a bit more and aimed it at Stacy. I was also loosing Stacy to the back ground with her black coat.

So I went inside and placed my second light on a mini foot stand and aimed it up at the wall to give some separation and depth to the photo.

You'll notice that my exposure settings were the same in the 2 photos above. By bringing the front light around a bit, I was able to even out the lighting on both subjects.

And here is the final image.

I Was Set Up! ver1.0

I wanted to start a new mini series on some of the lighting set ups I've used in hopes of helping others in their quest for better off camera flash techniques.  The hardest part is remembering to shoot a wide shot of the set up.  Hope these help.  Let me know how I can improve these.

Rob and Stacy

We went out to Salt Lake this past weekend to spend some time with Rob and Stacy.  She has a wedding photography business and so we swapped portrait sessions.  3 locations and 2 days later, we had some great images.  First stop was a creepy abandoned house in American Fork. I could have spent all day shooting there!  Second spot was an antique shop with all sorts of crazy little nooks.
